Aanant & Zoo freut sich sehr am 17. Januar
2009 die Einzelausstellung der kalifornischen
Künstlerin Channa Horwitz zu eröffnen. Die
Künstlerin wird zur Vernissage ab 19 Uhr
anwesend sein. /
Channa Horwitz arbeitet seit Anfang der 60er
Jahre kontinuierlich mit Zahlen, Rhythmen,
Bewegungen und an den Möglichkeiten diese
Strukturen zu visualisieren. Als Gemälde
präsentiert stellen die Diagramme Zeit und die
Farben Bewegung dar. Die so entstandenen
Kompositionen wurden teilweise
choreographisch ausgelegt und in Multimedia-
Interpretationen verwendet. /
„Die Begrenzungen und Struktur, die ich meinen
Werken auferlege, lassen mich Freiheit erfahren.
Denn nur scheinbar sind Limitation und Struktur
das Gegenteil von Freiheit. Ich bin dahin
gekommen, sie als Synonyme und als
Grundlage der Freiheit aufzufassen.
So wie ich die Welt sehe, ist sie scheinbar aus
einer Folge von Zufällen entstanden und hat sich
daraus entwickelt. Scheinbar bestimmt der
Zufall mein Leben und die Entwicklung, die es
nimmt; aber tatsächlich ist es eine Struktur, die
durch mein Begehren, sowohl bewusst als auch
unbewusst, dirigiert und determiniert wird. Mein
Werk basiert auf der Theorie, dass die Struktur
nur lange genug wirken muss, um scheinbar
zufällig zu werden. …" schrieb die Küntlerin 1976
über ihre Kunst. /
Aber Zufall ist nicht zufällig. Iterative Spiele, die
auf einfache Logik gründen, werden bis in
schwindelnde Höhen gestreckt. Channa Horwitz
extrapoliert einfache Logik. Ungeachtet dessen,
wie nahezu unfassbar komplex und zahlreich die
Variationen werden, können fast alle Werke
dieser Künstlerin auf das Gitternetz
zurückgeführt werden. /
Channa Horwitz lebt und arbeitet in Los Angeles,
Kalifornien. Sie studierte am California Institute
of the Arts und stellt seit 1963 ihre Arbeiten aus
(u. a. Mitte der 70er gemeinsam mit Sol LeWitt).

Ihre Werke sind in zahlreichen Sammlungen
vertreten, wie etwa im Getty Research Institute,
im Los Angeles County Museum of Art, im
Neuberger Museum of Art (NY), etc.
Im Frühjahr letzten Jahres wurden die Arbeiten
von Horwitz auf dem OpenSpace im Rahmen der
Art Cologne präsentiert. /
Mit der Ausstellung bei Aanant & Zoo werden
nun erstmals in Deutschland ihre Arbeiten im
größeren Umfang gezeigt. ///
Aanant & Zoo is pleased to announce the
forthcoming opening of a Californian artist
Channa Horwitz on 17. January 2009. The artist
will be present at the vernissage from 19:00.

Channa Horwitz has been working on numeric
systems, rythms, motions and on the ways to
visualise the given structures since the early 60‘.
Presented as paintings the diagrams represent
time, whilst colours represent motion. The
created compositions became choreographic
scores, which have been interpreted in
multimedia interpretations.

„I experience freedom through the limitations
and structure I place on my work. It would
appear that limitation and structure are the
opposite of freedom. I have found them to be
synonymous with freedom, and the basis of
freedom.
/
As I see the world, it appears to have grown and
evolved through a series of chances. My life and
how it evolves appears to be determined by
chance; but in reality, it is a structure directed
and determined by my desires, both conscious
and unconscious. The theory behind my work is
that if structure plays out long enough, it will
appear to be chance. It won‘t be chance, it will
only appear to be chance.…" wrote the artists
about her works in 1976.

However, what appears to be coincidencial is not
always coincidencial.
/
Repetitive games, that are based on simple
logic, spun out to dizzying heights. Channa
Horwitz explores simple logic. No matter how
complex and differenciated the variations
became, almost all of the artist‘s work can be
traced back to the grid.
Channa Horwitz lives and works in Los Angeles,
California. She studied at the California Institute
of the Arts and since 1963 has been exhibiting
her works (among others in the middle of 70‘
together with Sol LeWitt).

Her works are gathered in numerous collections,
for instance in Getty Research Institute, in Los
Angeles County Museum of Art, in Neuberger
Museum of Art (NY), etc.

At the beginng of last year the works of Horwitz
were presented at the OpenSpace during Art
Cologne.

During the exhibition at Aanant & Zoo the artist‘s
composition will be shown in Germany for the
firs time.
